This Saturday, August 13th there is a Full Moon Hike at the San Tan Mountain Regional Park in Queen Creek. You will be guided by a ranger for a 2.2 mile stroll along the Stargazer Trail.

Here in Arizona we have a delectable treat called the Sonoran Hot Dog. It is a hot dog wrapped in bacon and smothered with some awesome ingredients that may or may not include beans, Mexican cheeses and crema, onions etc.

My favorite so far has been from Moreno's Mexican Grill on Arizona Ave in Chandler.

Today while shopping near my house at the Fry's on Combs Rd. I noticed that we now have a Moreno's in Queen Creek! I am so excited as now I do not have to drive across town for my cravings. I recommend the award winning Sonoran Style hot dog $2.79. Also they have an awesome HUGE fresh Shrimp Cocktail that is loaded with shrimp $10.79. The shrimp cocktail is enough for two but you may not want to share. Enjoy one of their awesome aguas frescas too!

Moreno's has a breakfast menu also. They are open M-Thursday & Sunday 6:30 am -9 and Friday and Saturday 6:30 - 9:30pm.

Great Veggie Shopping in Apache Junction

With these times of high gas prices and budget crunching I would like to recommend one of my favorite shopping destinations in Apache Junction.

I have been shopping at Superstition Ranch Market for a few years. For me it is worth the drive for some great prices on fruits, vegetables and more. It all started with my first purchase a few years ago where I walked out of this market with a cart of great food for less than $20. You know I LOVE a good bargain. I work too hard for my money to waste it.

The fruits and vegetables are not the polished and unblemished versions you find at A.J's or Fry's, however if you are cooking with them and want great tasting food at a great price then you may want to check this out.

CHEESE CURDS!!!!! Superstition Ranch Market carries Arizona Cheese Curds that rival any found in Wisconsin.
Beans beans the magical fruit........ Tons of dried bean and soup varieties.

Rows of dried fruits and assorted old fashioned candies. Also salsas and local honey galore.

Also an assortment of old world style delicacies.

Superstition Ranch Market is located off Apache Trail in Apache Junction at 7 N 114th Street. Look for the bright neon hand written signs touting prices for their fruits and veggies.

Gateway Aviation Day - Open House

If you are looking for something to do in the area in March there will be an open house at the Mesa Gateway Airport at 5803 S. Sossaman Rd. If you have ever driven through the area but have never flown from this airport this would be a nice way to tour the facilities and get a close up look at some planes.

The event is called Gateway Aviation Day. It will be held on March 12th (2011) and will feature 30 aircraft displays and other exhibits. There will be a kids zone and food concessions.

The event will be from 9-2 and is free but canned food donations will be accepted for the United Food Bank.

I've been to some fabulous markets in Phoenix and Scottsdale. Vendors selling fresh cheeses, salsas, a great assortment of fresh veggies and fruit. It would be lovely to have some true vegetables and food items available at this Queen Creek market.

Burrowing Owls in Queen Creek

Have you ever been driving around the farmland in Queen Creek and the San Tan Valley and noticed small owls sitting on the side of the road? These are burrowing owls.

I've spotted them many an afternoon on the side of the road on Signal Butte Rd., near Ocotillo Rd. I've also noticed that there is now a major housing development construction site being dug in the area. I'm thinking this is going to affect these little creatures immediately.

The little owls are not on the endangered species list but are on a conservation watch list.

There are two nice Halloween events happening in Queen Creek and San Tan Valley this Saturday.

Trunk or Treat

Sat. Oct. 30, the Town of Queen Creek is hosting a "Trunk or Treat" event from 5:00 p.m. until 9:00 p.m. at Desert Mountain Park. The town is anticipating over 5,000 attendees at this event, which will feature fun for the whole family.

Trunk or Treat Street provides a safe place for children to trick or treat as decorated cars line the drive and pass out candy. Those looking for a fright can venture into the "Phantom Funhouse." The Bone Yard provides attendees with carnival games, vendors and food. Live entertainment will also be available on the "Stage Fright” stage. Roving entertainers will also be available to keep those in line happy and engaged.

For any dogs that want to get in on the fun, the town is also hosting a Howloween Canine Costume Contest.

San Tan ValleyPecan Creek North Spooktacular

The Pecan Creek (North) Subdivision is once again throwing a community party to celebrate Halloween, and vendor space is still available. Their annual Spooktacular event will be held Oct. 30, 2010, from 4:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. at Jack Harmon Elementary School located at 39315 N. Cortona Dr. in San Tan Valley.

The event will feature a costume contest, hay rides, face painting, a balloon artist, food and drinks, a canine demonstration by the Pinal County Sheriff's Office, multiple bounce houses and of course, the vendor event. This is the third annual Spooktacular and volunteers are working hard to make it the most memorable yet.

There has been a lot of discussion regarding healthcare reform in the news lately. Times are tough and many employers are scaling back benefits including insurance options. This brings me to my poll question this week:

RIP Robert Schimmel

I was so sad to hear about the death this week of comedian Robert Schimmel. He was one of the few comedians that made me laugh so hard I cried. He survived a heart attack and cancer. He died this week after a serious auto accident in the Phoenix / Scottsdale area.

I had the pleasure of seeing his show at the Tempe Improv. I had a good friend who was battling cancer. I sent him a book written by Mr. Schimmel titled "Cancer on $5 a day, not including chemo". He so made my friend laugh and it was so nice for him to read a book by another person going through cancer treatment.

Even though I did not know him personally I am so glad that I knew about him and had the opportunity to laugh at his jokes.

RIP Robert Schimmel - you will be missed.

Greetings again from Queen Creek / San Tan Valley. As my last poll shows I have a couple of followers but not too many. I love it just the same. For those of us who took my last poll it looks like Fresh and Easy beat out McDonald's.

I'm seeing nice fluffy clouds floating over the neighborhood today but it looks like rain to the east again. A girl can still hope.

For those of you who visit the Queen Creek Pork Shop, just a reminder that they close for the month of August. Next Saturday is the last day to buy your products until September. I stocked up on my favorite pepper sticks today and some bacon to get me through August.

McDonalds or Fresh and Easy? New Poll

My poll topic today is dear to my heart. The San Tan Valley area is still starving for good fun restaurants and shops. There is a Fresh and Easy building at Ironwood and Ocotillo that has been built but never opened. This frustrates me to no end. Is the reason it has been standing emply the economy? I'm sort of tired of hearing this as an excuse. Yes, the economy is bad but we still have plenty of population here and a working population at that. Check out Ironwood or Ellsworth on any weekday morning at 7:30. You will see cars galore headed out to work. Albeit they are headed to other cities to work but they are working just the same.

We so need some good businesses around here. So here is my poll question this week. If a business was being built near your home would you prefer a McDonald's or a Fresh and Easy Market?

4th of July greetings my blog reading friends. Although there were not many partakers the results of my first poll are in. I'd like to thank anyone who took the poll and especially those who left comments.

The question was, Do you feel that illegal immigration lessens your chances for employment?

The answers were, 16% polled said yes. 66% voted no. 50% were said indirectly and 50% said that they were Arizona residents.

Granted I only had about 5-6 people answer the poll, I guess that is a start.

There are a few 4th of July events going on this week in the area.

The Queen Creek Olive Mill has some daytime activities if you don't want to do your own grilling. They will be grilling in the grove. By the way, if you have not tried their cupcakes, please do. They are awesome!

My apologies that I have not writtine much lately. I'm pretty bored at present. Needless to say, the weather is starting to get hot here. You can fry an egg on the sidewalk. (really) The snowbirds are headed back up north and the Sheriffs are back on Ironwood in the morning watching speeders.

This is the time of year when neighbors hang out indoors to beat the heat or can be found behind block walls floating in their pools.

Miami Arizona - A Short Tour

Antique Store in Miami, Arizona I took a drive a week or so ago to Miami, Arizona. They just happened to be having a street festival called Boomtown Spree.

I'm sharing just a few photos from my short stop in town.

Quaint paintings of cats found around town. Miami is a mining town. The buildings in the town are a bit rundown but you can see the structure of a town that was once vibrant. As seen at the street fair the town is an interesting melting pot of mining families, hippies and laid back entrepreneurs.

There are quite a few cool antique shops right off the main drag through town.

I think for a person interested in antiquing this would be a great way to spend a Saturday morning shopping. There are also a few places to grab a bite to eat.

If nothing else it is certainly a beautiful drive from Queen Creek to Miami.

Hummingbirds in the House!

I've been getting alot of hummingbirds at my feeder, especially at dusk.

I especially like this plastic feeder. It comes apart for easy cleaning.

Here is a recipe for make your own hummingbird nectar to use in your feeder. It's super easy.

Boil four cups of water.
Remove water from the heat.
Stir in one cup of white sugar.
Cool the syrup before filling feeder.
NOTE: Do not use honey, which can cause a fatal fungal infection on the birds' tongues.
NOTE: Do not add food coloring to the solution. It's not necessary, and it may be harmful. Even a small spot of red on the feeder will attract hummingbirds.
You can store the extra syrup in the refrigerator for a week.
Hang the feeder where you can see it from a window.
Clean the feeder at least once a week. In warm weather, you may need to change the syrup and wash out the feeder every day. Don't let the syrup turn cloudy in the feeder — that's mold. It will make hummingbirds avoid your feeder, and it may make them sick.
If ants discover the feeder, discourage them by applying petroleum jelly to the wire that suspends the feeder. Or suspend a cup of water above the feeder. The Nectar Protector accomplishes this easily.
Keep it clean!

Where Have All the Rhino's Gone?

Disregard the photo. Everytime I hear the word Rhino I think of Jim Carey.......

Forget the cowboys in QC, where have all the Rhino's gone? I know, that doesn't even make sense but I have that song Where Have All The Cowboy's Gone in my head after a night of karaoke.

After seeing lots of tweets about Rhino Cafe' I FINALLY got a sneak peak. I went in on a Saturday and had a cup of coffee and a muffin. Very cute place. Very nice folks behind the counter. Good Coffee. Good Muffin.

They have free WIFI so if you are inclined to hang out with your laptop at a cafe', this might be the place for you.

This is another local Queen Creek / San Tan Valley spot worth patronizing so they can stay in business. DO IT ( I command you). I know, that never works but I think it's funny.

Chocolate?

I had read a local news article about the Olive Mill offering chocolate flavored olive oil. To date I have not seen this product there. Sorry if I got any ones hopes up. I don't think it sounded that appetizing but I was willing to try it.

I still highly recommend a visit to this spot in Queen Creek. The owners have done a beautiful job of making this a destination in the area.

How many hearts were broken this past week due to a negligent drinker. Sadly this victim was hit by a drunk driver who crossed to the wrong side of the road and hit a teenager who was bicycling with two friends. The driver left the scene.

A Visit to Gilbert & Liberty Market

I took a little drive the other morning to our neighbor to the west - Gilbert Arizona.

I'd been hearing about Liberty Market and stopped in for some breakfast and coffee.

I was impressed with Liberty Market. It had a modern coffee bar feel in a relaxed atmosphere.

My breakfast was good but the coffee was better.

There was a nice crowd at about 10 am on a weekday.

No, that's not me in Paris riding a scooter through the busy streets. It's one of the bathroom stalls at Liberty Market. What a crack up. Each stall has a different theme and when you shut the door music turns on.

I love themed bathrooms. Barrio Cafe in Phoenix has some pretty cute ones.

Someone has a good sense of humor. And hey, as a bonus the bathrooms were clean! What a concept.

All in all my visit to Gilbert was good and made all the better by visiting Liberty Market. We sure could use a place like this in Queen Creek / San Tan Valley. Hint, Hint.

Yikes, this heat has made me so lazy. I haven't posted in a while. I blame it on the 100+ weather we have been having. I'm begging for more monsoon rain.

Went to Sushi Creek today for lunch. Nice and cool in there. Excellent food. Tried their special today the Roadrunner roll. Not bad. Still love the Bigfoot.

If you haven't been there, try it - you'll like it. They even have an I hate sushi menu.

Who are the 200 people Sup. Martyn supposedly queried to move forward with Bella Vista, AZ prior to this vote? A whopping .0025 percent of the 80,000 residents of this unincorporated area.

This area should remain Queen Creek until it incorporates and ALL are enabled to vote on a community name.If it weren't for the newspaper articles and a couple of HOA newsletters with info. on this vote it wouldn't have been known to the dismal 2,000 people that voted. A whopping 2.5 percent of the residents.

Did you know Sup. Martyn already mailed in a letter to the USPS on June 11th requesting with the zip code change that a name change to Bella Vista be made? Talk about the wagon leading the horse... Give me a break. This was a scam. Thought he could sweep it under the rug. And let's see just how much more taxpayer money is wasted when a "revote" occurs during the election cycle because people will be outraged over the new name "San Tan Valley".

Another politician all about himself, way ahead of himself. Doesn't think he needs to consult others on his actions, even when it affects them.

The press is stating that the number one choice of names for the unincorporated area near Queen Creek per a vote at the community meeting this week was.... San Tan Valley followed by Bella Vista.

Personally this blogger feels that although the name Bella Vista is beautiful, locals were upset that the name appeared to be pre-chosen for them and possibly voted for a different name in retaliation. Whatever the reason at least the residents of this area had a say.

Sadly the local newspapers and Pinal county did little to get the news out to the locals in the area. News articles mentioned the name change but provided little detail on where the vote was taking place. Secret Vote to name unicorporated Queen Creek Area

Please read this article from the Arizona Republic.

Rogue Pinal County supervisor Bryan Martyn has taken it upon his self to try and name the unincorporated area near Queen Creek on his own. Evidently there is a vote to be had on Monday but according to the article int he Arizona Republic Martyn and other organizers were still unable to say where the vote will be held.

Why not give others a chance to make suggestions for naming the area. This is so wrong! Haven't the people who bought homes here who were under the impression they lived in "Queen Creek" suffered enough without some politician deciding what he would like our area to be called. Put it to a real vote dude. What's your rush.

I'm with Tisha Castillo, president of the San Tan Area Chamber of Commerce in asking that this vote be delayed. There is no need for your stealth secret vote. Just because you have visited a couple of homeowner meetings does not give you the right to name our area. What's your rush? What's your motive?

Queen Creek wants you to shop local!

We'd love the idea of shopping local. I love the idea of a farmers market but the farmers markets in our town are actually craft shows with maybe one person selling fresh produce. The selection is slim.

I'm waiting for the new Fresh and Easy to open here in Queen Creek.

The East Valley Tribune ran an article titled "Queen Creek developing marketing plan". I wanted to make a few comments as I learned a few things about Queen Creek in this article.

1. Did you know that Queen Creek has a marketing department?

2. Did you know that Queen Creek had a marketing phrase?

"Convenience of the city, comforts of the country".

According to the article "Queen Creek is getting ready to embark on a branding initiative to define the down as a destination - not a bedroom community of the outskirts of the Valley"

The town spokeswoman stated that Queen Creek is "more than just homes" "There's a lot of culture that happens out here, like Schnepf Farms and the perming arts center and horseshoe Park".

The article indicated that the town is looking for branding and marketing ideas.

I can save you a million in marketing right now - let's twitter about it. If you have a twitter account and find something worth twittering about in Queen Creek, tweet about it. Use the words "Queen Creek" in your tweet. Anyone who does a search on Queen Creek on twitter will get tons of information. Yes it's a wild card. Some of it may not be the message that the town council would want to get out but it would be a real bites of information about the area.

I'm starting my Queen Creek tweets today. Feel free to follow my tweets by clicking the Twitter link on this blog. Tell the world what you want them to know about Queen Creek. I hope most of it is positive but also honest.

We've been in our subdivision for about four years now. We put our landscaping in about the same time. I'm so excited that some of my plants have bloomed for the first time this year.

Art in the Park at the Arboretum

If you have not been to the Boyce Thompson Arboretum you are really missing out on one of our local wonders. This place is amazing. Not only do they provide a beautiful area for walking and studying plants they also provide some nice programs for promoting local artists.

This Saturday they held an Arts in the Park art show.
the show was sponsored by the Soroptimists International of Gold Canyon. They did an excellent job with this Art fair.

There were some awesome jewelry artists showing their wares. I found some of the nicest quality beaded jewelry that I have seen in a long while.

Some of the most original art were these reclaimed art crosses from Desert Resurrections. These crosses are made from recycled wood and items found in the desert. The ultimate in recycling.

I think a whole show of recycled art would be fantastic.

If you haven't been to the Arboretum yet I urge you to go there. It's a wonderful way to spend a day or morning. They have a picnic area if you want to have a little lunch with your family.

Mesa Market Place Swap Meet

If you haven't been to the Mesa Swap Meet yet now is a great time to go. This time of year the vendor booths are full. Once the weather gets hot, and it will come quickly, the vendor booths pair down.

I love to take out of town visitors to this swap meet to get souvenirs. The prices are great and the variety is excellent.

You can find everything from cow skulls to cactus.

The vendor areas are shaded and you can buy food and drinks there including a nice cold beer.

There is usually some live entertainment near the food court. A great spot to enjoy a hot dog and a beer or a soda.

The odds are good and the goods are odd. You will find all sorts of interesting items that you may or may not be able to live without.

I think anyone would enjoy this place. If you are traveling and don't have enough room in your suitcase to bring something back, well you just buy a suitcase there. They have a ton of luggage and purse vendors.

This past weekend I saw vendors selling jewelry at discount prices. There were bead vendors, home decor and of course t-shirts galore.

(The only thing I can think of that I don't like about this place is the loud speaker with a man talking incessantly about the booths and deals you can get. I think it is wasted breath and unnecessary and sort of obnoxious.)

The place is nice, clean and safe. I would recommend it to anyone.

I've been seeing signs lately for a "Farmers Market". I stopped and the markets have been more like a craft show. In my opinion there are not enough farm products being sold to be considered a farmers market. Call it what it is - a craft show. Don't get me wrong. I am thrilled that someone is trying to get things started but we need more fresh farm goods for sale.

Filbertos has taken the spot where the Mexican restaurant was at Ironwood and Ocotilllo.

A new local coffee shop opens on Ocotillo at Ironwood. Please note Bear Creek Coffee has a drive thru. Help support our local coffee shop.

Queen Creeks Horseshoe Park Equestrian Center opened last weekend. It's very impressive. Horse lovers in the area must be so excited. There is a nice covered arena with bleachers for viewing and some other outdoor arenas.

About the new Queen Creek Post Office

I had a recent comment on one of my older blogs about the Queen Creek Post office. It appears to be from Jeff Brown of the Town Council of Queen Creek. I wanted to share it with all.

New post office update (11/13/08)

Q: I have heard the new Post Office has been put on hold or canceled entirely due to budget issues with the Federal Government. Is this true?

A: No. This is not true. The United States Postal Service has actually just closed the bidding process for contractors and will be selecting a contractor very soon. The new post office is planned for construction on land recently deeded by the Town to the Postal Service. This property is located on the north side of the Queen Creek Wash and west side of the Ellsworth Loop Road (west of the Development Services Building). The Postal Service still maintains that their Fall 2009 opening date is still achievable for the approximately 26,000-square-foot building.

Request for potentially 1322 more new homes

This sign for a request for an amendment to the Queen Creek general plan can be found on Queen Creek Road in a farm area about two miles east of the Barney Family Sports Complex.

The request is from the law firm of Pew and Lake who specialize in zoning permits.

The request pertains to 357 acres at NW Queen Creek Rd and Meridian. It is asking for a parcels to be designated for Type A, community ccommercial and Type B industrial. It also asks for 138 acres to be designated high density residential. That would be 0-5 homes on an acre. Potentially that would be 690 homes. It also asks for 79 acres of additional medium to high density homes that could include 0-8 homes per acre for another 632 potential homes.

Grand total - potentially 1322 MORE new homes in Queen Creek.

Hmmm. Two cars per home = 2644 MORE cars on our newly created roads. Sounds like we need to widen all of the roads AGAIN.

People - don't we have enough EMPTY or foreclosed homes to go around without creating additional traffic and water stresses on the area? I still support a moratorium on home building in this area until our economy improves. Bring on the additional employment, but please consider slowing the home building.

Ten New Years Wishes for Queen Creek

10 New Years Wishes Queen Creek and surrounding areas. (not necessarily in this order).

1. That city and county planners make a moratorium on new housing developments in the area. We'd like for our homes to retain their value and this would help immensely. We have more than enough new or almost new empty houses in the area.

3. That we continue to see quality restaurants and retail move in the area.

4. That developers and the city work to make our community walkable or bike friendly with wide sidewalks and bike trails.

5. That taggers find some other outlet for their art besides scribbling nonsensical signatures and the like all over town.

6. That the community supports deserving local businesses so that they can thrive and afford to pay their rent and continue providing us businesses with local flavor.

7. That employers with decent wages decide to locate in Queen Creek and that the businesses that have been in the area for year continue to experience success.

8. That more people care about their community and neighborhoods and get to know their neighbors on a more intimate level. (This is on my personal list for this year)

9. That people take pride in their community starting with their own properties.

10. That Pinal County and Queen Creek powers that be take each other into consideration before making decisions that affect their neighbors.

The Walk Score is a number between 0 and 100. The walkability of an address depends on how far you are comfortable walking—after all, everything is within walking distance if you have the time.

Here are general guidelines for interpreting your score:

90 - 100 = Walkers' Paradise: Most errands can be accomplished on foot and many people get by without owning a car.

70 - 90 = Very Walkable: It's possible to get by without owning a car.

50 - 70 = Some Walkable Locations: Some stores and amenities are within walking distance, but many everyday trips still require a bike, public transportation, or car

.25 - 50 = Not Walkable: Only a few destinations are within easy walking range. For most errands, driving or public transportation is a must.

The cotton fields are very pretty right now with cotton ready to be harvested. I think the fields look like popcorn balls. So pretty.

Queen Creek Farmers Market

This Saturday was the first Queen Creek Farmers Market. It was held at the in front of the new Queen Creek Library. This happens to be a great place to hold an event like this.

The event was very nice and organized. They had a DJ and later a live band. It had a cool community event feel to it with families walking around with their tots and dogs.

My only wish is that there were more farm fresh veggies for sale. There were only about two vendors who actually sold produce and the choices were limited. The majority of the vendors were selling handmade items and crafts. I'm not complaining too much as the craft vendors were great. There were wool vendors who spun their own wool, a booth from the Olive Mill and Schnepf Farms. There was a lovely woman who made awesome greeting cards. A number of excellent jewelry and beading booths. I made a few cool purchases myself and as usual made a few impulse buys.

I met up with a friend from Gilbert who has not spent much time in QC. After we left the farmers market we drove over to Schnepf farms and had breakfast at their restaurant. I had never eaten there before and was pleasantly surprised. We had a breakfast of eggs, potatoes, bacon and biscuits topped off with some delicious coffee. It was very relaxing and the food was great.

We continued our Queen Creek themed Saturday morning by crossing the street to the olive mill to stock up on some excellent olive oil. Oh my... they just happened to have a wine tasting event. Another nice surprise.

After our wine tasting we headed over to the Pork Shop so that I could stock up on my favorite bacon and pepper sticks. Gotta contribute to the local economy.

This was such a fun morning that I'd highly recommend this mini-tour of Queen Creek to anyone. I am not sure when the next Farmers Market will take place in QC but when I hear about it I will post it.

The new Florence High School complex is coming up nicely on Gantzel.

Morning traffic jam again on Ironwood approaching the 60. We need two left turn lanes. The delays in the morning are quite annoying. Add another 20 minutes to your commute.

Uncle Bears Bar and Grill opens in Queen Creek. Locals rejoice.

I finally had the chance to check out Uncle Bears Grill and Bar on Rittenhouse. It has only been open for a few weeks. When the Uncle Bears opened on the Power Road location we could never get a seat in the place as it was packed.

This location is extra roomy with a giant bar that seats about twenty. There is an outdoor patio area and tons of big screen TV's for any sports enthusiast. It has a nice comfortable atmosphere and the food is decent too.

Hooray for Uncle Bears! We wish you luck in Queen Creek. Thanks for considering Queen Creek as a location. We sorely need more establishments such as this.

One day it was an old house with some horses in it's small yard. The next day it was a burned out building and eyesore on Ocotillo. I blinked my eyes and it was gone. Bulldozed. Not a bad thing.

I do worry about those big trees on Ocotillo near Ironwood. I always wonder how old they are and what type of trees they are. How many animals live in them. I fully expect for them to be torn down in the sake of progress. I'm sure someone thinks they are dangerous. I think they are interesting and beautiful. They are more than likely some of the oldest trees in the area.

Queen Creek and Pinal County Keeping it Real

I've been reading that the town of Queen Creek wants to keep a sort of rural farm theme going as the town develops. This means public art with farm themes ie. metal cows, tractors everything with a sort of modern rusty look. These are the themes I am seeing at the new shopping hubs in the area.

I wonder how the new giant high voltage franken-poles for the new substations that are to run through town will fit into that theme.

I love the way some of our surrounding cities are disguising cell phone towers to look like tall palm trees.

I vote for a giant cowboy power pole sort of like the old Vegas cowboy. This would make it interesting AND a tourist attraction. Maybe he could point the way to the Olive Mill or San Tan Flats which are two of the most original and classy and fun places in the area.

On the edge of Queen Creek, Pinal County is taking this rural / farm theme a to a whole 'nuther level.

Landscaping in the medians are au natural with tumbleweeds growing right down the middle of the streets. Some are even big enough to block your view in a turn lane. We also have natural tumbleweed removal - it's called monsoon winds.

On a recent week we all had the pleasure of a dead cow laying on the side of the road. Now THAT has a rural country feel. The majority of the homeowners in the area do not have a rural farming background so this was a super treat as many of us have never seen a dead cow in full view before.

I personally like a prettied up "rose colored glasses" view so we don't scare the tourists away.

While driving on the most eastern part of Germann Rd. I could not help but notice some wonderful landscaping along the side of the road. This is the location of a company called Arid Zone Trees. They specialize in trees and plants that grow in our growing zone for commercial use. Simply beautiful.

Kudos to AZT for adding beauty to the area.

Cotton

Cotton has been a crop grown in the Queen Creek area for decades. Right now the crops in the area are about waist high and the cotton is starting to show on the bush. I thought I would share a few up close and personal images of the cotton plant and it's flowers and buds.

In the past week we've seen farmers in action around town. Bales of hay in the fields look so orderly.

Dictionary.com defines a bale as: a large bundle or package prepared for shipping, storage, or sale, esp. one tightly compressed and secured by wires, hoops, cords, or the like, and sometimes having a wrapping or covering: a bale of cotton; a bale of hay.

Yep, that's what we are seeing.

We had a huge lightening storm last night in Phoenix and Queen Creek. I tried to capture it on video but it does not do it justice.

Food Co-op East Valley

I was driving around one of the Queen Creek / Pinal County neighborhoods and noticed some activity near a park. There were baskets lined up in the grass and people were coming in and picking up the baskets and putting them in their car.

I was curious about what was going on and spoke with someone who appeared to be in charge (the clipboard was the give-away). The event was a distribution from a local food co-op called Bountiful Baskets.

You can join the co-op and order fresh produce, breads and whatever is the current fresh offering of the week. It costs about $15 for a basket and you get about $50 worth of groceries. That would be what you would pay at the grocery store.

From the local news yesterday - "Smells of gas prompted neighbors to alert officials to an Agritopia home Tuesday night where Gilbert police and fire discovered a marijuana growing operation. " - What!?

First they break up a prostitution ring and now this.

What a great name for a neighborhood where you grow things. It's like an episode of Weeds.

Agritopia - Street Scene

Rarely do we I get a chance to comment on something as an alleged breakup of a prostitution ring in a nearby suburban neighborhood.

Nice Bungalow in Agritopia

Apparently the police department in our neighboring town of Gilbert broke up a prostitution ring in Gilbert's golden neighborhood of Agritopia. Evidently the "ring" employed about 100 people. I guess that's just one other creative way to pay your mortgage in these tough times.

Under Construction

I love Agritopia. The neighborhood is reminiscent of an old time neighborhood with front porches and nice clean streets. Very sweet. It just goes to show you that you never know what goes on behind closed doors.

Don't worry Agritopia, I think that since the police were on the case they have saved the reputation of your charming neighborhood.

Arrest in prostitution ring shocks Agritopia residents

Residents in Gilbert's Agritopia community, an area of cottage-style houses with an urban farm, were shocked when police arrested a resident suspected of being a key player in a Valley prostitution ring. (Shocked is an understatement except maybe for that one soccer mom)
Phoenix police arrested Peter Shifman, 56, this week and seized his home and vehicle. Police suspect Shifman of being the ring's accountant. (Can they seize your stuff if you are just a suspect?)
He faces nine felony charges, including money laundering, conspiracy and maintaining house of prostitution. (otherwise known as a Bungalow of prostitution)
At least 100 people worked in the Phoenix-based operation that set up high-dollar dates through various escort Web sites including AZ Confidential, Escorts in Action, and Hips Touring, police said. (Not to mention Craigslist and word of mouth)
At least 50 were arrested in raids that began Monday. (Holy Smokes)
Some of Shifman's neighbors were surprised that police suspect their neighbor being involved in the operation.
"They're just good salt of the earth, honest people," David Barber, who lives across the street from Shifman and his family. (Just makin' an honest living)
Barber said he never noticed anything suspicious about Shifman or his home.
He described him as kind-hearted and a good neighbor, even questioning how involved Shifman might have been in the prostitution ring.
"I'll wait for the trial to be over to find out," he said.
Neighbor Sherry Charniski said Agritopia is not the kind of area police visit frequently, which added to her shock of Shifman's arrest.
"It took us all by surprise," said Charniski, a neighbor. "I mean, this neighborhood? This is basically a Christian neighborhood." (Huh? - Who makes the determination if a neighborhood is Christian or not?)
Cottage Living magazine recently named Agritopia, near Ray and Higley roads, the top neighborhood for 2008. The neighborhood features a Christian school, community center and various parks for its 300 classical and 150 cottage-style houses.

This new barrier popped up this week where the construction is going on at the Links Golf course. I'm assuming it's for dust, but possibly so we can't see what is going on behind the great wall.

We had a little rain this weekend and I noticed that a nice section had fallen down. Ha! We can see inside.
